Why Google Reviews Matter for Your Small Business SEO

When you’re a small business, every edge matters. Whether you run a carpet cleaning company, a cabinet refinishing service, or any other local business, one of the most powerful tools at your disposal is free: Google reviews. Reviews aren’t just about making your business look good, they also play a direct role in how visible you are on Google and how many new customers choose you over the competition.

At Kite Media, we often tell our SEO clients that reviews are one of the most valuable assets they can build. Here’s why they matter, and how you can start making reviews work for you.

The 10 Review Hump

Many SEO tests have observed that when a business crosses the line from 9 to 10 reviews, rankings improve, and we’ve seen it ourselves. 10 reviews is an invisible line Google has drawn, and once you cross it, you start to gain trust with the search engine. It’s the minimum number of reviews to start really ranking. If you’re running a brand-new business, or if you’ve been around for a long time but haven't focused on getting reviews, your first goal should be to hit 10 reviews as fast as possible.

But here’s the key: 10 reviews isn’t the finish line, it’s just the starting point. Businesses that consistently grow their reviews build long-term trust with both Google and potential customers.

Why Consistency Matters Even More

We’ve seen it time and again: a business gets a ton of reviews in a month, then goes silent for a year. That quick burst helps for a short while, but over time, those reviews lose impact. Google wants to see that your business is active and relevant right now.

That’s why review consistency and recency is just as important—if not more important—than the total number of reviews. New reviews show that your business is still serving customers and doing a great job. Businesses that get consistent reviews tend to rank better than those that may have a lot of old reviews but no new ones. It’s the same principle we talked about in our recent post on the importance of consistency in marketing.

Reviews Build Trust and Boost SEO

Reviews aren’t just about ranking better. They also build credibility with the people who find you online. Just think about how often you read reviews before you choose a business or product to go with. Even if your business isn't ranked #1, great reviews can help sway customers to choose you.

And here’s another bonus: Google can actually “read” reviews. If a customer mentions something like “best cabinet refinishing in St. George” or “fast carpet cleaning service,” those keywords can help your SEO too. Asking your customers to mention a specific service in their reviews can help here, but remember that the review must be the customer’s own words.

How to Get More Reviews

Getting reviews doesn’t happen by accident. You have to make it easy for your customers. A few strategies that work:

  • Ask at the right moment. After finishing a job, politely ask if the customer would be willing to leave a review.
  • Send a follow-up. A short text or email with a direct link to your Google review page makes it simple. Don’t harass customers, though. Once shortly after the service is performed is enough.
  • Use review business cards. Some of our clients have had great success with business cards that include a QR code linking straight to their Google review page. Customers love the convenience, and it takes the friction out of the process.

What Not to Do When Getting Google Reviews

While collecting reviews is critical for SEO and credibility, it’s just as important to follow Google’s guidelines. Taking shortcuts can hurt your business rather than help it. Here are some common mistakes to avoid:

  • Buying reviews: Paying for reviews, or using a service that posts fake reviews, is strictly against Google’s rules. Not only can it lead to penalties or removal of reviews, but it can also damage your reputation if customers catch on.
  • Incentivizing reviews: Offering discounts, freebies, or other rewards in exchange for reviews is also against Google’s policies. Reviews must reflect honest experiences, or Google may flag your listing.
  • Asking only happy customers to review: Cherry-picking only positive experiences can seem manipulative and skew the authenticity of your reviews. Encourage all customers to share their honest feedback. Do not use a review-gating service, where only happy customers are passed onto review platforms.
  • Neglecting responses: Failing to respond to reviews—especially negative ones—can make your business look unengaged or uninterested in customer satisfaction. Always respond professionally, thank customers for positive reviews, and address issues in negative ones.

Reviews, much like everything else in marketing, is a long game. Focus on growing naturally over time, instead of trying to cheat or game the system.
